Things to Know When Selling a Home Pets Lived in

Dogs in the Living RoomWho doesn't love a fluffy kitten or a playful puppy? Unfortunately, the answer is a large portion of the people interested in buying your home. Even a large number of potential homeowners that have animals and love them, have no interest in purchasing a home where other pets have previously lived in.

Why Don't Potential Homeowners Like Pets?

  • Pets Make People Nervous: People who have never had pets or people who were never really around pets feel nervous around them. Even people who have pets can feel nervous around an animal they don't know.
  • People Fear Pets: Some people do not like dogs specifically because they are afraid of them. There may or may not be a reason for it.
  • Inexperience: A person who has never been around pets, has no idea how to respond and react to them.
  • These Aren't Their Pets: A person does not really have an issue with their dog jumping on them, licking them, or even biting on their shoe. It can be terrifying when it is a dog you do not know.

What Do You Do About This Situation?

You should never, ever have a pet in a house when you are doing a showing. This doesn't mean you need to get rid of your pet, this just means you need to relocate your pet temporarily. Having animals roaming around the house you are trying to sell, is not going to help you sell it.

You are going to want to consider paying for a deep cleaning and possibly replacing any carpet. You have to understand that some people do not have pets because they are allergic to pet dander. Unless you are willing to deep clean the home, you need to make sure your potential buyers know that animals have been in the house.

It is not impossible for a pet owner to sell their home; it just might take a little more work.
